Design
Designing a custom piece of furniture takes skill and experience. I work by taking your idea and creating a piece that will have the right proportions for your space.
Lederer Studio is a one-man shop in New Jersey specializing in custom furniture and carving
"I enjoy the challenges of creating custom furniture for a client that addresses their needs perfectly. My hours spent carving and creating sculptures allow me to explore original designs and forms. I'm obsessed with high quality joinery and believe that fine, elegant lines should never compromise structure. I expect every piece of furniture that I make to last a lifetime." - Tom Lederer
Tom Lederer has been building fine furniture for over forty years. He formed Lederer Studio in 1978 after four years as an apprentice with Alan Rockwell and several years of working for notable Designer/Craftsman Phillip Lloyd Powell. Lederer is also highly skilled in classical wood carving techniques after studying the practice with Master Carver Ian Agrell and renowned wood sculptor Ian Norbury.
Tom's approach is timeless. His designs are a synthesis of enduring traditional styles including Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts. Tom believes that each piece of furniture should be unique to its maker while remaining steeped in long standing furniture traditions and enduring high-quality craftsmanship.
I've worked with building furniture for over 40 years. I have a deep understanding of proportion and traditional furniture design.
I build each piece by hand with solid wood and veneers that I select. I employ mortise and tenon joinery in a lot of my projects. It's traditional joinery which provides structural integrity. Using proven methods such as these, the furniture I make will last a lifetime.
Few people can say "there is no other piece like it." Few homes have a true statement piece of furniture when you enter. Working together, I can create a truly one-of-a-kind piece for your home.

I can incorporate custom carved elements into many projects. Carving is very old technique and adds a one of a kind element to a cabinet, door, or piece of furniture.
Much of my work uses very traditional furniture techniques. I use dovetail and mortise and tenon joinery when appropriate.
